Writer's Alcove

Awards

I have entered a huge number of contests – what can I say, I think contests are a wonderful way of measuring your talents, and possibly a link to an agent, publisher, director, or producer.  I honestly believe anything can happen, plus they’re much better than those nasty rejection letters.  If you don’t succeed, you typically don’t hear back…

My four awards were through contests held by the Writer’s Digest magazine – which I religiously read every month (among others), and have saved every copy over that last several years…

My 1st Honorable Mention was for ‘The Link’, which was written by me, but I share the credit of the story line with a previous co-worker.  Any idea given to me, and which I act on, will carry the name of the person along with mine.

The 2nd Honorable Mention was for a love story called ‘Delayed Flight’ now in print in paper back or ebook.  Believe it or not, this story came to me when I was stranded in a snowbound airport — don’t you just love those times?  By the way, if you missed the note, Delayed Flight is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and where other ebooks are sold.

My 3rd Honorable Mention was for Jester the Clown, by far my favorite.  The research alone was mine boggling and gave me pause to think about the Other Side, the choices we make here, and where we’re supposed to go.  I found the subject exhilarating. The aware was for the screenplay and the novella is forthcoming, look for it in paper back and ebook.

My first award, which I call, ‘Thanks for Showing Up’, was for the screenplay, ‘Switched’.  Due to the violent content, I chose not to list it among my collection.  When I have a chance, I plan on rewriting the story, removing or down-playing the violence as much as possible.  I love books and movies, but not the violence.  I tried portraying the villain as closely as possible, but I am afraid I may have gone too far. When rewritten it will be available in screenplay format, paper back and ebook novel.

As I mentioned, even though I did not place as well as I had liked, I cherish these awards.  When you enter a contest of thousands and place in the top twenty or so, it’s a thrill.  Who knows, if I keep plugging away, I might just hit the top three.

Again, welcome to my website, Writer’s Alcove, the place where I go to dream of stories and tales.  Grab a beverage and stay a while, and remember, it is only make believe.
